General Butt Plug Recommendations

I love butt plugs. But finding good ones is difficult.

If you’re an anal beginner or you’re unsure what size to get, start with my introduction to butt plugs. If you’d like to learn about the principles behind my recommendations, read my piece on the elements of good butt plug design. But if you just want some recommendations, this is the article for you.

I’ve only included basic, traditional butt plugs. Prostate plugs, textured plugs, and plugs attached to cock rings can be awesome. But they’re beyond my purview here.

You’ll also notice all my recommendations are silicone plugs with t-bar bases. There are other body-safe, non-porous materials and round bases are useful if you have a vag and want to fill both holes simultaneously. But t-bar silicone plugs are my jam.

And, unlike most of my other lists, I’m not trying to be exhaustive here.

Soft Plugs

My butt adores soft silicone. It’s so damn comfy and luxurious.

• SquarePeg’s Egg Plugs in Super Soft

  These are my favourite plugs. The super soft versions are exquisitely squishy. The thick necks are great for girth training, but they’re thin enough that you’ll never feel anxious about retention. And the sizes are well-spaced, so you can safely progress through their ranks.

  SquarePeg has other soft plugs, too. I’m singling out the Egg Plugs because their close adherence to my principles of good butt plug design makes them stand out from the pack.

• Oxballs’ Ergo Plugs in Super Soft Smoke

  Their necks are thinner than the Egg Plugs’, so they should be easier to wear for extended periods. And they’re slightly, almost imperceptibly softer.

  The Egg and Ergo Plugs are ranked 1A and 1B in my butt toy pantheon. To choose between them would be supremely nitpicky, so you should go with whichever one has a size closest to the girth you’re looking for.

• Fetish Zone’s Ballistic Penetrators in 00-30 or 00-50

  They’re one of the few butt plug makers that discloses the shore durometers of their silicone rather than merely saying “soft” or “firm.”

  I wish the tips weren’t pointy and the t-bar bases didn’t bulge in the middle, so they’re a distant third place in this category.

Bad Dragon and Silicone Nozzles also make soft plugs, but they have round bases.

Budget Plugs

Many of these plugs have mild cases of Pointy Tip Syndrome. But hey, you’re saving money.

• Pipedream’s Anal Fantasy Collection Silicone Plugs

  They’re comfy and ergonomic, and they come in six sizes: mini (1″ diameter), small (1.5″), medium (1.75″), large (2″), xl (2.5″), and mega (3″).

  The silicone is firmer than I prefer. But the shape is great and the thin necks make long-term wear easier.

  If you want a large, inexpensive plug, these should be at the top of your list. Most big, inexpensive toys are made of unsafe materials like PVC.

  Fyi, these plugs come with a small tube of Anal Eaze. Throw that shit out. Desensitizing your ass is a bad idea. You need to be able to feel pain. That’s how you know when something’s wrong.

• Doc Johnson’s Mood Naughty

  They have long tapers for easy insertion and come in medium (1″ diameter), large (1.25″), and xl (1.5″). There’s also a small with a 0.75″ diameter, but it’s so thin that even newbies can pass it over. And the small through large sizes are available in a set.

• CalExotics’ Silicone Anal Exerciser Kit

  They’re very similar to the Pipedream plugs, but they come as a set with three sizes: 1″, 1.25″, and 1.5″ in diameter.

• Titus’ Silicone Series Butt Plugs

  They’re available in small (~1.1″ diameter), medium (~1.25″), and large (~1.6″). You can also get all three in a set.

Stretching Plugs

The extremely low bulb-to-neck ratios on these plugs keep your sphincters stretched much wider than typical plugs. This can help you size up to thicker toys faster, and it’s also great if you want to feel really full. But my favourite use for stretching plugs is foreplay banking.

What’s foreplay banking?

You insert the plug by yourself. When you see your partner ten minutes or a few hours later, they remove your plug, apply lube, and jump straight into anal sex. No foreplay (or at least very little) is necessary because you’ve pre-stretched your ass and your plug has kept you stretched.

These plugs are a bit more difficult to retain than my above recommendations, but not nearly as much as you’d think. I’d hesitate to wear one in public, but they’re great for wearing around the house.

• Vixen’s Tristan 2

  It also comes in a couple smaller sizes, but the big guy is the important one. Because its neck has a 5 ⅛” circumference.

  That’s thicker than most penises, which is key for foreplay banking. Yet its head only has a 6 ⁹/₁₆” circumference, so compared to other plugs, you don’t need to open very wide to reap the benefits of Tristan 2’s thick neck.

• SquarePeg’s Blunt Plugs

  The important sizes for foreplay banking are S3, S4, S5, and S6, since their neck circumferences (4 ⅜”, 4 ⅜”, 5 ¹/₁₆”, and 5 ⅜”) are comparable to penis circumferences.

  SquarePeg’s super soft silicone makes the Blunt Plugs as supremely comfortable as the Egg Plugs. But don’t fear they’re so soft they won’t hold your sphincters open. I assure you form personal experience, this is not the case.

  Tristan’s firmer (but not that firm) silicone is still very comfortable. It’s just more assertive.

Warmup Plugs

• Tantus’ Ringo

  Yeah, it’s a plug, but forget that. Ringo’s killer feature is its long, smooth taper. Use it as a foreplay tool to stretch yourself and either adjust to your favourite toys quicker or step up your girth game.

  Servant Sex Toys makes a similarly shaped toy called Splitter. Unlike Ringo, it doesn’t look pluggable. But Ringo maxes out at 7 ⁹/₁₆” in circumference, while the largest Splitter goes up to 14”.
